Mika Brzezinski of MNSBC Rips Paris Report
Will this happen in Taiwan?
During the 6 weeks stayed in Taiwan, it was really a pain in the ass watching TV news. I will say the Paris Hilton case is nothing compared to the situation in Taiwan right now. It's like our news stations are drugging the mass day in and day out.
Sigh; hopefully there will be a Taiwan "Mika Brzezinski" someday.

Still Here
Still Here, sung by Lene Marlin, the singer of the song "Sitting Down Here".
I like this song; it's nice. But can you tell it was adapted from which famous Chinese song in Taiwan?
Still Here - Lene Marlin
I just can't help it \ No matter what you say \ It sounds you're far from okay \ I know you're hurting \ So please just stop the lie \ Just say, say you'll try
Try to stop hiding, and show me how you are \ I see through all the faces you put on \ I know you're wondering, just how you got to this \ All you've lost, all you missed
But it will be fine, and you'll be smiling \ And you'll be grateful, for what's still there \ And you'll be hoping that you still have it here \ The things you thought you lost \ The things you thought were gone
I wish I'd seen it \ A long time ago \ At least, now I know \ I need your promise \ No point of asking why \ Just say, say you'll try
Try to stop hiding, and show me how you are \ I see through all the faces you put on \ I know you're wondering, just how you got to this \ All you've lost, all you missed
But it will be fine, and you'll be smiling \ And you'll be grateful, for what's still there \ And you'll be hoping that you still have it here \ The things you thought you lost \ Were gone

Have You Clicking for Taiwan Today?
Well, today is Friday. Let's see what is hot in Taiwan right now. Yes, the world clicking game.
It's interesting following the click-mania initiated from PTT-gossip. 台灣宅宅 invented their own full-automatic programs clicking for real person. Then the German website launched new systems to detect and ban players using this kind of assistant programs. And currently 台灣宅宅 is trying to find a way not to be detected.
Taiwan now is at the leading place among all countries in the world. Good job,
Here is a clip for click-game promotion in Taiwan, very funny.

Love Song
Love Song, also a lovely song. It is the 'iTune free download' of this week. I downloaded and listened to it while biking home last night. I also played it to FanFan. He loves it!
If you have iPod and iTune, you can go to the iTune Shop to download it for free.
One thing interesting, while I searched the lyrics on the Internet, I found there are several words in the second half of the song, right after "help me see the daylight", no one knows what that is, and all written as "my ???"(labeled in the lyrics below). Can you tell what she sings?
In the iTune version, this part was deleted, so you can only hear it in the MVs below (about at the point when 1:23 left in the second MV).
Sara Bareilles - Love Song (Live)
Sara Bareilles - "Love Song" at Pappy & Harriet's 10-07-06
Head under water and you tell me to breathe easy for awhile \ The breathing gets harder even I know that \ Made room for me \ It's too soon to see if I'm happy in your hands I'm unusually hard to hold on to
Blank stares at blank pages \ No easy way to say this \ You mean well but you make this hard on me
I'm not gonna write you a love song \ Cause you ask for it \ Cause you need one \ You see, I'm not gonna write you a long song \ Cause you tell me it's make or breakin' this \ If you're on your way I'm not gonna write you to stay \ If all you have is leavin' I'm gonna need a better reason to write you a love song today \ Today
I learnt the hard way that they all say things you wanna hear \ My heavy heart sinks deep down under you and Your twisted words \ Your help just hurts \ You are not what I thought you were \ Hello to high and dry
Convinced me to please you made me think that I need this too \ I'm trying to let you hear me as I am
I'm not gonna write you a love song \ Cause you ask for it \ Cause you need one \ You see, I'm not gonna write you a long song \ Cause you tell me it's make or breakin' this \ If you're on your way I'm not gonna write you to stay \ If all you have is leavin' I'm gonna need a better reason to write you a love song today
Promise me you'll leave the light on to help me see the daylight (My ???) \ Cause I believe there's a way you can love me because I say
I won't write you a love song \ Cause you ask for it \ Cause you need one \ You see, I'm not gonna write you a love song \ Cause you tell me it's make or breakin' this \ Is that why you wanted a love song? \ Cause you asked for it \ Cause you need one \ You see I'm not gonna write you a love song \ Cause you tell me it's make or breakin this if you're on your way \ I'm not gonna write you to stay \ If your heart is nowhere in it I don't want it for a minute \ Babe, I walk the seven seas when I believe that there's a reason to write you a love song today \ Today

Dancing on the Love Song
So you think you can dance
Nature Proceedings
By accident I found a webite under Nature magazine which I feel some readers here might be interested.
Nature Proceedings
Nature Precedings is a place for researchers to share pre-publication research, unpublished manuscripts, presentations, posters, white papers, technical papers, supplementary findings, and other scientific documents. Submissions are screened by our professional curation team for relevance and quality, but are not subjected to peer review. We welcome high-quality contributions from biology, medicine (except clinical trials), chemistry and the earth sciences.
--
There are poster- and presentation-format files which I feel very useful to quickly have a general understanding of specific topics. Just use the search function to find topics you are interested.
Of course you can also put your own stuff/ideas on it and get responses from others, such as this topic "Open Notebook Science Using Blogs and Wikis".
Although there are not many articles/files right now, let's see what will happen after several months?

Moving to My New Seat
I moved to my new seat today.
Kendra is a student from Physics program co-advised by Tim and Dan Fisher in Physics Department. She is going to graduate pretty soon and won't come to the lab very frequently. So she asked me if I want to switch to her seat several days ago. Therefore I moved.
One reason I moved is because I can have a huge window view besides my seat. Although we are not in a resort-type of place such as Scripps which oversees a beautiful beach (a NUDE beach?????) in San Diego. It is good enough for me because we also have something speical outsides the window.
We are in the top floor of a 5-floor building. Notice the lower building in the picture right in front of our building. It is the dental medical school and its hospital.
By those windows, you can see dentists in the building pulling out teeth from patient's mouth. That is something which cannot be seen in Scripps.

Britain's Got Talent
Damn, why the British version is so much better than the American one. I watched the first season of America's Got Talent last year. It's awful.
Now the show just has her first season finale in UK. Actually it is very enjoyable watching some ordinary people who get extraordinary ability (no, I am not talking about the Heroes...)
Two favorites in BGT - Connie and Paul, a 6-year-old girl who sings "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and a mobile phone salesman who sings opera, neither got respect from judges before opened their mouths on the stage, but both got judges amazed after their first performances.
Connie the extremely cute 6-year-old girl.
Paul the mobile phone salesman.
At the end, Paul won the competition. He will sing in front of the Qreen.

Dilemma in Summer Break
My group meeting is the last one before our lab's Summer break. Who says there is no Summer break for graduate students?
Every Summer Tim and Chris will go to the MBL at Woods Hole for three months doing experiments, teaching, boating, fishing, and hanging around with their old friends. Although Tim is an extremely hands-off guy, which means he won't ask you anything about your progress unless you tell him first, it still feels differently without Tim and Chris being in the lab.
Now I am in a good position. I just finished my group meeting before the Summer break. So I am clear to plan future directions. Finally I can try some ideas and hope it will be an interesting Summer.
However, thinking about future directions per se is a tough work, sadly.
After I summaried my current studies as a descriptive paper, I feel I should go deep and tackle the molecular mechanisms. The problem is in which way.
I am familiar with molecular biology which should be the easist way for me. Tim always appreciates the biochemistry which is also what I think I should pick up before leaving the lab. Imaging analysis and pushing more microscopy work is definetely good for me in the future but the downside is it will take you a very long time to be "kind-of-good" at it.

Sad to Hear That
Finally I finished my group meeting today. Although still working on my manuscript, it is about time to think about the next step(s). I proposed several possible directions but it seemed most of them are not easy to deal with. I thought it should be a relief to have my group meeting done. Hmm...
Not a while ago, one of my classmates in college emailed me; said he will come to Boston for a meeting and also a postdoc interview in my school. By MSN, he asked me if I hear anything bad about that lab. I gave him my evaluation and some suggestions.
However, at the end, suddently he said "You are always smarter than I. I know it since we were in school".
He was my roommate during my freshman year. Somehow it makes me feel sad to hear something like that.
Things just don't have to be in this way, you know?

Trivial Things in the Shop Drive
I.
This is Scion xB, the zipcar we drove today. Every zipcar has its own name. This one is Breet. I like its shape and style. It's very spacious inside, especially the space upon your head.
The little red car is the car(t) of Shaw supermarket, driven by FanFan.
--
II.
We happened to meet the suspension bridge raised for boat passing. Our first time, feel interested.
--
III.
We also met a Ferrari 360 Spider in Boston downtown. Of course, when the light turned green, we lost her very quickly. My wife said she knows the driver. She saw him on TV commercials. That guy is a loan shark.
Actually it is not very difficult to drive a Ferrari on Boston streets. Here is the information I found:
Rent a Ferrari 360 Spider in Boston
Our only warning to you is this: Don't rent this exotic car if you don't like attention, because you're going to get it. Heads turn, jaws drop, thumbs go up, and smiles always appear when you drive by.
Oh, bye the way, the fee for two days like this weekend is about $3750.
Not surprised she is owned by a usurer.

Fan Fan in the Car(t)
Fan Fan in the Car

Writing - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Yesterday I got more feedbacks from Tim, by paper this time.
There are full of rewrites in my draft. I found one of my problems is I am too ambitious trying to state to much, and therefore often move some conclusions to result section to keep the discussion part small. Tim said I should put most of them back. Still have a long way ahead.
Yesterday I mentioned that Tim is pretty GOOD at "writing". But actually his "handwriting" is very BAD. Plus my UGLY "draft", it fits the title pretty well - The Good, the Bad, and the UGLY.
Tim is used to read and comment drafts on paper. It is very common that lab people cannot recognize Tim's script, seeking help to recognize/guess which word it is. The funny thing is sometimes even Tim cannot figure out what was written down on the papar, by himself.

Is It a Gift?
I was told by many people in the lab that Tim is an amazing writer. Now I have my own experience for it.
Yesterday morning I got an E-mail from Tim attached with several re-written paragraphs for my draft. It is really really really good, especially compared to what I wrote. Chat with Paul this afternoon on this. Paul said Tim is the best writer he has ever seen. I asked if it is a gift? Paul paused a while, and answered "I think so."
Sometimes it is like an insight that make you capable seeing something else cannot see. Or it is similar to the ability which make you always know how to describe it procisely, concisely, and keep the elegance at the same time.
After all, although writing skill can be polished by pratice and time, talent must play an important role in it also.

Spam Blog ?
Since few days ago, I have been asked to pass the "word verification" first to post any new article on this blog. In the beginning I thought maybe that is Blogger's new policy; then I realized it might not be the case.
It appears that new articles in this blogs come too frequently or certain forbidden words were said in my blog (such as "Yankees SUCK!" ???, ha-ha).
Anyway, Blogger robots now consider my blog as a spam blog.

Sorry for the bad movie quality, but it is really funny! Go Sox!
I can't help but add some classic quotes from the clip. Go Sox!
"Yeah, the Yankees defeated the Sox Sunday night. 10 more of those and you'll be in the 2nd place." (HA-HA, very very classic!)
"My favorite two teams, Rod Sox and whoever plays Yankees" (This is very old though.)
"I can't figure this great is because we're working so well or the Yankees suck so badly." (The latter, I think.)
"I am enjoying the Mets, so enjoying watching the Mets.... The Mets is so good, (pause), with so much less money!" (so true.)
"He (Roger Clemens) did it about 40 years ago, when he was 20" (Roger who? The one who just got injured again without playing any MLB game?)

Finally...
The DVD player arrived yesterday. It is a gift for trying Citi credit protector plan. Now we can watch DVD again!
When I unfolded the box, I found my new DVD player actually is the same one previously I got from Chase (which is broken now) for applying credit cards, a very simple JWin DVD player.
Hmm, don't know how long this one will last?

I Know How to Fix It !
So you think you can dance! Huh?

Pig Again
Alina in our lab is heading to Columbia for her postdoc years. No surprise, we went to the PIG again; I can't even remember this is the N-th time I come to the same bar this month...
Without any doubt, our lab is unequivocally a great lab and an amazing place to be, especially after moving to Systems Biology Department. But, it is undeniable that our lab is also a very tough place for students. Tim is always busy and has limited patience. Even he likes to teach students, sometimes he just cannot find any free slot on his calendar to do it.
Alina had been struggled for a long time, published the first paper in her 5th year on JBC which is the last journal our lab will send to. However, she survived. Alina independently generated an idea and project which is probably beyond Tim's knowledge. Even Tim acknowledged it in Alina's defense. Finally Alina got her paper accpeted by Nature.
Last Wednesday in the group meeting, Tim annouced that both Alina and Kendra had their new papers accpeted in the first round without any revision. Tim joked "so it is really possible!!!"
Alina is going to switch to developmental biology. Tim and Chris gave her several classic books in DB and everyone in the lab wrote down some words on first pages.
It somehow makes you feel really good being in such a lab, even though you have to go through some hard time in first several years.
