Okay, it's TGIF, again. let me bring you another information which fits the TGIF better than the plastic bottle one I just posted.

BioNumbers

What is that? As written on the website, Bionumbers is a collaborative community effort to establish a database of useful biological numbers. The best part is, you can also add the number you like to know on the wishlist.

I think it is a good and also a cool idea. BioNumbers is generated mainly by our dear neighbors - the Kirschner-ers. The contributors are also in a good mix of biologists and non-biologists (or should I say Systems Biologists?)

Oh! Those Plastic Bottles!

Guillaume, our former French postdoc, joked in his farewell party said the greatest French invention ever is to earn money by selling water in plastic bottles. It sounded funny then, but not anymore once you know something.

I bet you all have seen following signs on the plastic bottles, but, do you know what that mean?

Microscope in Culture Room

忘記了有沒有提過我們有個專管 culture room 的 manager，可以幫我們凍存細胞，做 stable cell line 等等的事。

最近不知誰給的建議，說跟「拿著細胞到隔壁去看螢光表現情形再走回 culture room」比起來，直接放一台螢光顯微鏡在 culture room 裡一定很方便。那 manager 聽了也就真的去請款買了台放在 culture room 裡。

不要覺得怎麼這麼好，開始羨慕，這其實是個頗怪異又不合用的想法，因為通常要看見細胞裡表現的螢光訊號，得把房間裡的燈關了才行，culture room 還有別人使用，一直開關燈也是很麻煩的事；結果就是花了一大筆錢但擺在那到現在一個禮拜還沒人去用過。

不知道在排列甚麼東西，這麼有興味？

看到黑影就‧‧‧

凡凡很愛喝水，出來我們會隨身帶著給小孩子喝的瓶裝礦泉水。偏偏凡凡愛喝水之外還很喜歡玩這個瓶子，每次大概有一半的水都是這樣子玩掉的。

後來好像發現了怎麼有個黑影一直跟著自己，開始跑來跑去想甩掉它。

飛機！飛機！

下午帶凡凡去住家旁邊 Design School 的草地上玩，一聽到飛機轟隆隆的聲音，凡凡便會仰頭尋找飛機的縱跡，特感興趣，有時嘴巴還會發出「嗚~嗚~嗚~」的引擎聲音。

如果找不到，會換個地方繼續尋找。不過有時想到別的好玩的玩意兒，就會忘了飛機的事了。



不管正在做甚麼事，都會立刻停下來開始找，找到就會用手指給你看。

「跳」舞

這陣子是 moving season，家裡也趁此機會更替了好些東西；耿慧的電視，俊仁的音響，都功成身退了。

新的音響花樣比較多，螢幕上紅紅綠綠閃呀閃的，立刻成為了凡凡最感興趣的新玩意兒，時常跑去按按這個鈕，壓壓那個鍵。

有時不知怎地給凡凡轉到了廣播，聽到音樂，凡凡馬上就開始扭呀跳了起來。

Another "I'll be there for you".

Even though I love watching Friends, I still like this one better. (BTW, I just found my school's library has almost every popular TV series in her DVD collection, such as Friends, Scrubs, Lost, etc. WOW!)

There was a time that "Bon Jovi" is one of the hottest bands in Taiwan (another is "Europe" which actually I liked more then). They are known as 邦喬飛 in Chinese. But it is rarely known that they was once called "棒球飛" in the beginning when Bon Jovi just entered Taiwan's market. It sounds like a joke but it is not. I did see their name printed as 棒球飛 on the cover of their cassette album, in a music store in Kaohsiung.

"New Jersey" is one of my favorite album in my collection (or I should say "was" since FanFan has taken it as his toy now). And "I'll be there for you" is the song I like most in that album. I love the lyrics very much.

昨天在當地的新聞也看到了這片段，主播也直呼奇蹟。

有些來這裡的人不在台灣，沒法接受台灣新聞台全天候的新聞轟炸；所以把相關片段整理在一起方便觀看。

先不論事故原因與責任歸屬，這次華航機組人員能在短時間內成功疏散全機一百多位旅客，仍是很值得肯定的事。

我對機上一些被訪問旅客的一些評論有點保留，一方面觀點不同，乘客無法瞭解機組人員做了哪些他們看不到的 protocol，再者事後回想多少失真，機上慌亂成一片，我想也沒多少人會真的注意到機組員說了甚麼或做了甚麼。還看到有人說她一上機就聞到燒焦的味道了‧‧‧

據說是地勤先發現漏油通報，不然照影片顯示的情況，或許差個一兩分鐘結果就完全不同了。可以看到在約略在爆炸的同時，機長從機首躍下。只能說真的是奇蹟。

歸功於 minuteman library network，家裡總是堆滿了各種給小朋友看的 DVD，說也奇怪，平平是宮崎駿的卡通，凡凡就對設定年齡層比較低的龍貓最感興趣，大概這年紀的小朋友已經可以看得懂，開始有自己的心智解讀了，不是只要會動的卡通就喜歡看；凡凡還喜歡看 Shrek。不過最愛應該還是 Elmo。

DVD 除了可以看之外，對凡凡來說另一個樂趣就是可以讓他把玩裝 DVD 的殼子，開開關關，樂此不疲。


Pixar 出的一系列電腦動畫，有點意外地凡凡對 Toy Story 沒甚麼興趣，反而最喜歡 Cars 這一部。看到畫面還會用手指要我們也一起看。


凡凡現在很喜歡拿著玩具車在地上開來開去。果然男生就是男生，從小就喜歡車子之類的東西。

喔喔

每次凡凡只要犯了甚麼錯，像把牛奶灑了滿地那樣的事，我們就會講「oh~oh!」，表示事情搞砸了。

結果凡凡聽了幾次也學起來，有時也會來上一段「oh~oh!」，還有好幾種不同的腔調交叉運用，聽起來超可愛。

平凡下午之尋常活動

也沒甚麼，就是爬桌底，看 Friends，吃乖乖，還有畫畫而已。

堆積木

凡凡上次回台灣時，萍萍表姑媽送了凡凡一套從 1 到 10 的巨型數字玩具幫助凡凡學習；凡凡現在半個數字都還不認得，反倒拿這些數字當成積木開始玩起來了。

凡凡最近對堆積木特有興趣，往往堆好後還會拿個洗澡用的小水鴨堆在最上面，玩的時候還會自言自語，樂在其中。


現在凡凡可以堆三個數字(有時再加上最上面的一隻小水鴨)。堆起來之後，得意的哩。


有的時候得意忘形，就糗了。

A Cool Teething Ring

凡凡的一口牙快長齊了。

這陣子是臼齒，因為臼齒的面積大，長牙時比較痛，凡凡感到不舒服，三不五時就把手指深進嘴巴裡摸著長牙的地方。這個時候，好久不用的 teething ring 就又派得上用場了，這 teething ring 有一側裡面包著水，是軟的，冰在冰箱裡拿出來讓凡凡冰陣一下，馬上就不吵不鬧，心情好轉，好用得不得了。



電視放的是 Barney 的 DVD，比較起來，凡凡還是比較喜歡看 Sesame Street 的 Elmo。

傑作

凡凡喜歡塗鴉，以往大致還是乖乖地在紙上或磁性白板上畫畫，現在開始學起名人雅士，故作風流，走到哪兒就題詩作畫落款在哪兒。

這就是凡凡的傑作。

侯寬仁反擊？

繼上次張系國後，又讓我看到個難以理解的人講難以理解的話。



「將不排除委任律師，對兩人追究法律相關責任」？

我對法條不熟，不知道侯檢座能告馬宋兩人甚麼？拿哪一條告？

與其憤而興訟，侯檢不如低頭想想到底這事情是為甚麼會鬧這麼大？講白了如果馬英九都會被這樣對待，一般升斗小民豈能不恐懼這事若是自身遇到了會是甚麼情況？

今天重點在侯檢的筆錄是否有失真甚至惡意扭曲的情況，一審法官認為是有的，如果不滿去對著蔡守訓開幹呀，說真的，講到「嚴重傷害檢察官的尊嚴，嚴重傷害司法公信力」，恐怕這事上侯檢的貢獻度還大一些。

侯寬仁反擊　要求馬英九及宋耀明道歉否則提告

忍了兩天，侯寬仁終於開砲了！
國民黨總統參選人馬英九首長特別費案前天宣判後，外界對於承辦檢察官侯寬仁批評聲浪不斷。繼昨天痛批法官「不厚道」之後，面對外界拿偵查筆錄大作文章，今（十六）日下午三點在特偵組辦公室，侯寬仁終於打破沉默，以罕見的嚴厲口吻表示，「馬英九先生和宋耀明先生對外言論，已經嚴重傷害檢察官的尊嚴，嚴重傷害司法公信力，若是兩人不拿出誠意，出面公開道歉，我將不排除委任律師，對兩人追究法律相關責任。」

馬英九特別費案宣判之後，在馬英九獲判無罪部分，法官在判決書中指出，檢察官侯寬仁在程序部分，對於證人吳麗洳的偵查筆錄「斷章取義」，因此將吳麗洳筆錄判為無效證據。

侯寬仁表示，對於這些批評他都虛心接受，但他無法忍受某些特定人士以筆錄為議題，操弄筆錄內容，傷害檢察官的尊嚴。

接著侯寬仁話鋒一轉，拿著事先擬好的聲明稿，逐字唸出「捍衛司法正義與司法公信力是我的生命，前台北市長馬英九委任律師宋耀明利用媒體，披露刻意經過竄改，節略證人陳述內容的行為，嚴重傷害司法公信力，我難以坐視，馬英九先生與宋耀明先生，應該對這種傷害司法的行為公開道歉，否則我不排除委任律師追究兩人的法律相關責任。」

侯寬仁批評馬英九及其律師，利用媒體披露部分筆錄，是嚴重傷害司法公信力和司法尊嚴，應該要對社會大眾道歉，給大家一個交代。

這幾天流量又有爆增跡象，上一次是中興的 Cell Paper 事件，這次看了一下，得感謝一下我們的杜大教育部長。

一人得道，雞犬升天，憎之愛之，連帶著一家老小都成了焦點。恰巧很久以前我在這兒提到過杜正勝有個女兒在國衛院當過 summer，跟我同年來美；只因文中提到了她的名字，馬上便有大批人潮從 google 尋線而來。

其實我跟杜家小姐根本不熟，所以也沒啥情報好挖的。

不過杜正勝果然是最受注目的閣員啊。

張系國 的 馬英九二審將判有罪

昨天馬英九案宣判的幾個小時前，跟朋友打屁聊到網路上看到的小道消息；DPP 中央黨部工作的某個小黨工講說他們在前一天晚上就拿到了判決書的影本，還開了一整晚的會，小黨工並宣告結果將是馬英九無罪，余文輕判。跟朋友猜著不知這消息是真是假，有點像正經消息又有點像搞笑；大約美東時間晚上十一點多上網看了判決結果，雖然不知余這樣算不算輕判，但馬的確是無罪。

瞄了下判決書，似乎侯檢座被釘得頗慘，不過心想若真是筆錄與自白有這樣大的出入，也的確是蠻恐怖的一件事。台灣政壇的反應，司法死去活來就不說了，還有戰省籍的，頗有創意。不過這次藍色是得利一方，所以暫可保持優雅風範，哪天翻轉位置，大概表現也好不到哪兒去。

阿扁倒是令人意外，沒有像上次陳菊那案子嗆明著說甚麼藍色法官，或鬼扯些司法要控制總統大選之類的話，大概跟蔡守訓也是他自己案子的審判長有點關係；另一說是余文這次被判刑，大概表示國務機要費那些假發票是脫不了身了，所以特別沉默。

不過昨晚看到了篇文章倒是讓我有點，不知該怎麼說好，是不是科幻小說寫多了，怎麼張系國會寫出這種文章來？

馬英九一審判無罪的消息傳來﹐我就說糟了糟了﹐不要著了阿扁(或曰邱義仁)的道兒﹐誤以為天下已經太平﹗這裡先做兩個預測(其實許多有識之士都有類似看法)﹕

(1) 二審判決必定會拖到明年一月﹐選戰決戰前夕。

(2) 如果那時馬蕭明顯落後﹐馬英九二審會輕判有罪甚至判無罪﹐但是以前者可能性為大﹐因為阿扁(或曰邱義仁)還要留個後手作文章﹐不會還馬英九完全清白﹐讓馬的民調上昇。如果那時謝蘇明顯落後﹐馬英九二審會重判有罪﹐讓藍營鬧個措手不及。

如果藍營還有任何人心存幻想﹐我勸他趁早醒醒吧。不論對綠營或藍營﹐這都是生死存亡之戰﹐絕不可有僥倖之心。什麼司法獨立﹐都是騙小孩子的﹐笑死人了。藍營的謀士要好好想想怎麼辦了。說正格的﹐到現在為止只見阿扁(或曰邱義仁)運子如飛﹐其他不論馬蕭謝蘇一堆人都好像吃了搖頭丸﹐只有傻頭傻腦被他(們)擺布的份﹐也未免太遜了吧﹖這樣的棋局不好看。藍營的謀士﹐養兵千日用在一時﹐你們都在幹什麼啊﹖一定得及早想好對策﹐現在不是溫良恭儉讓的時候﹗

可能的對策之一﹕馬英九可以公開要求二審延至明年三月之後。如果遭到拒絕﹐馬英九可以行使公民不合作權﹐拒絕出庭。謝長廷的案子始終不審﹐機要費案扁嫂可以使用種種借口不出庭﹐馬英九沒有必要當大傻瓜。當司法機關喪失公正時﹐公民可以不合作。(但是以馬的守法個性﹐大概不會這麼做。)

可能的對策之二﹕人民可以聯署要求司法機關將各位總統候選人以及現任總統及夫人所涉及的案件都延至明年三月之後再審﹐以免影響選舉結果。(這是很公平的辦法﹐也許雙方都可以接受。)

可能的對策之三﹕申請大法官解釋，案件暫停審理。(這就如球賽應善於利用暫停。馬的辯護團隊應該可以考慮採用。)

可能的對策之四﹕﹖﹖﹖

太陽眼鏡

凡凡現在很愛照鏡子，拿梳子梳頭或抓件衣服穿也要到鏡子前比來比去欣賞一番。這次想自己戴太陽眼鏡也是一樣。

週末超市西瓜特賣，媽媽拿著西瓜嗵嗵嗵拍著，凡凡看著也要起身拍拍西瓜，看看到底有甚麼好玩的地方。

Vonage Commercials

前面提到 Vonage 的廣告讓人印象很深刻，查了一下 youtube 上有很多模仿的好玩版本。

Vonage 也有一個在 blogger 的 Vonage Phone Service blog (http://vonagephone.blogspot.com/)，有興趣可以去看一下。

這是凡凡那時候看的廣告版本，主要訴求是轉換成網路電話一點都不麻煩，而且便宜又大碗。




到了後來慢慢地訴求有點轉變，現在主打的口號是 "Smartest decision for people doing stupid things"。所以廣告裡就會出現一堆笨蛋，然後 Vonage 阻止他們繼續做笨事。

但我在想，這樣不是等於是讓上門的顧客承認自己是笨蛋嗎？怪。

Jump Jump

凡凡這陣子多了個興趣，三不五時就直想練習怎麼跳起來。而且還有個習慣，跳完後會自己大聲叫好鼓掌，定要別人也給他讚美一下才開心。


又跳了一次，這次鼓掌完接著還表演了一下接電話的情形。

現在凡凡到了晚上時間差不多了，就曉得該是聽歌跳舞的時候了。會主動拿著 iPod 到房間裡指著喇叭要人放音樂給他聽。


聽到音樂就高興了。這是凡凡第一次聽 Beautiful Girl，果然合味口，會跟著節奏擺頭，還會用手打拍子。中間還興奮地小跳躍了一下。

I Lost My Fellowship !

Hmm... Don't worry. Things are not that bad as you guys thought.

從七月開始學校換了一套新的薪資系統，發放 stipend 的時間從月初改成月中；前幾天發現七月被預扣了一筆州稅，麻州稅法對外國學生的 fellowship 是不課稅的，所以心想大概是新系統沒設定好的關係。

後來問了 financial office 的人才知道沒有弄錯，原因是獎學金的名目從 Grad Stud Fellowship 改成了 Research Asst Grad Student。因此我的繳稅文件也從 S-1042 換成 W2，錢的總數沒減少，但因為變成是工作收入，所以就得交州稅。據說原因是 NIH 的人來學校視察，指出原先的發錢方法不合規定，要用 RAship 發才正確，所以就變成現在這個樣子了。

認真算起來，對我來說沒有太大差別，我雖然聯邦稅的報稅身份是 single，但州稅的身份確是 married，加加減減交的州稅應該是全都可以拿回來。比較痛的是其它單身的學生，不含退稅一年大概就交了一千美元的州稅吧。不過我都是這樣安慰那些單身的台灣留學生，跟他們說最痛的不是我們，而是大陸的學生。雖然他們有 treaty 前五年不用交稅，但改成 W2 之後就得交了，身邊大陸來的朋友每個月就少了五百多美元，哀聲不絕於耳。

他們也都同意，這樣想心裡就好過多了，哈哈。

恍惚

一早凡凡起床，坐在 high chair 上等著吃早餐，大概是還沒睡飽，一臉恍惚樣。


坐等早餐必吃優格的空檔，感到無聊便拿著 cheerios 玩了起來，不過還是一臉沒睡飽的樣子。

牙齒

凡凡牙齒越長越多，就快長齊了；所以最近特愛吃冰棒，一方面夏天消暑，也可以有鎮痛的功效。

蹦蹦跳跳轉圈圈

凡凡現在越來越會自己找樂子，唱歌跳舞看起來就是快樂得不得了的樣子，也不知是從哪學的，大概是芝麻街看多了學起 Elmo 跳舞來了。

凡凡現在對自己的身體也很有興趣，三不五時就會拉起衣服按按他的小肚臍；之後接著就開始在床上蹦蹦跳跳，另外既然凡凡的奶奶愛看，這次還順便再表演了一下關門與開門的功夫。


照例晚上洗完澡這時候是聽音樂的時間，今天放的是天下無雙原聲帶裡的曲子，電影裡頭也有出現。凡凡聽著聽著想到了便又爬到床上開始蹦蹦跳跳，這一次表演了新招式，跑到自己的小床上「快樂地轉圈圈」！

下午家附近的兒童公園有個爵士音樂的活動，便約好全家一起去瞧瞧。凡凡常去，對公園熟悉得很，馬上便玩起了公園裡大大小小的玩具給凡凡爸爸看。

這邊專門給兒童遊玩的公園幾乎都有親水設施，別看凡凡在家玩水玩得不亦樂乎，大膽得很；看到公園裡噴得半天高的水柱還是會心生害怕。鏡頭前凡凡伸直雙手看起來好像頗享受噴水的感覺，其實一看根本是躲得遠遠的，離噴泉還有好大一段距離。

不過說實話那噴泉還真的蠻有力的，水噴得高不說，連落下的水滴都好大一顆。

玩耍一段時間後，八點多天色漸漸暗了，開始準備吃的東西，準備來頓露天晚餐。凡凡也沒閒著，繼續竭盡所能地找東西玩著，藝高人膽大，甚麼樣的都敢爬。


晚餐吃的是炒麵，凡凡很會也很愛吃麵。大概真的很盡力地玩著，回家沒多久就呼呼大睡了。

無拘無束

早上凡凡睡得正香甜，大字形舒服地仰躺著。

隨著年歲過去，
不知覺被套上了無形的制約，
懂得愈多，想得越雜，也被束套得更緊；
沒有機會回到小時候這般盡情舒展無牽無掛了。

Money Talks?

Journal of Cell Biology 在上一期的 Editorial 中批評了 HHMI 與 Elsevier 新達成的協議，而 HHMI 也迅速地在此期 JCB 中做了回應，JCB 也對 HHMI 的回應做了回應。

事件起因是 HHMI 與期刊界的巨人 Elsevier 不久前達成了協議，以每篇 1500 元美金計價支付 Elsevier，換取 Elsevier 六個月後免費公開這些 HHMI research papers.

看起來像是件好事，但 JCB 指出了特定研究機構付錢給商業出版社這樣的行為有爭議，同時此舉也嚴重傷害了目前推動無償公開研究結果的努力。

HHMI 辯白說他們支付的錢是補償出版社的損失，而且提供了 HHMI 人員在投稿時更多的自由。JCB 的回應則指出 HHMI 避重就輕完全不曾提及或忽略誤解了 JCB Editoial 中的質疑。

看完兩篇文章後，較傾向 JCB 的立場。JCB 沒有講得很明的一點是這樣的舉動可能影響了整個投稿過程的公平性，商業出版社在商言商，在特定組織的 paper 可以為出版社帶來更高利潤的誘因下，有沒有可能對選稿審稿的偏好產生影響，這很難說。JCB 講到以他們自身做為例子已證明即便在六個月後無償公開所有刊登在 JCB 上的 paper 給大眾閱覽，JCB 的營利收入並沒有出現任何負面的影響。而 HHMI 在做為一個學術研究重鎮的情況下，非旦沒有發揮影響力推動無償公開，反而資助商業出版社有償公開，無異公開鼓勵商業出版社繼續抵抗這股無償公開的潮流。

JCB 等 non-profit journals 多已實施六個月後無償公開研究論文有好一陣子了，那到底辦 joournal 賺不賺錢？我不是很清楚，不過很有可能不是很賺，除了廣為人知的 open-access PLoS 系列有財務危機外，幾年前 Science 的 AAAS 也差點倒閉停辦，在這樣的市場下，HHMI 砸下大筆金錢給 Elsevier ($1500/paper) 和 Cell press ($1000/paper)有沒有其它「額外」的影響就很值得注意了。

JCB 是 Rockefeller 辦的 non-profit joournals，雖說比不上 Howard Hughes，也算是個有錢人了，HHMI 若真有心也可以像 Rockefeller perss 一樣考慮自己辦 journals，然後完全無償開放。不然若要付錢給出版社，就乾脆做得更有誠意些，付多一點要求所有 HHMI papers 一經刊登就立刻開放給大眾，不用再等六個月。比 non-profit journals 還進步，大概 JCB 也就不會說甚麼了。
