「則近道矣」是甚麼？

已經好一段時間了，凡凡睡覺前每每會唸一段《大學》給凡凡聽，經過這麼久，總算有收獲了，凡凡有時一個人玩的時候就一直在那兒覆誦大學之道在明明德。

不過，好像也就那幾句而已。而且，凡凡現在很愛問「為甚麼」「是甚麼」，大學裡面有些篇章連大人都沒有共識怎麼解了，要跟兩歲的小朋友說明是甚麼意思真的有點困難。

又是玩雪

一如預期，到了週末又下起大雪了，等到了晚上，把在屋子裡悶了一天的凡凡帶下樓讓他活動活動玩玩雪。

不過這次就出問題了，凡凡本來爬雪山爬得很高興，不知怎的雪靴鬆脫在雪裡，赤腳的凡凡終於感覺到冷了，開始哀哀叫說要穿鞋。

吃完飯後凡凡便興高采烈帶著小鏟子與水桶到庭院裡玩雪，雖然說去年已經看過，不過大概記不得了，這次看到不時經過的鏟雪車還是覺得很新奇。跟去年相比，凡凡今年除了大了一號，也會嘰哩聒啦講話了

坐在堆滿雪的椅子上，竟然不怕冷。

堆雪人加上在雪地裡打滾。

走到中間雪太深陷下去爬不出來了，只好開始求救喊「HELP!」，也不知是哪裡學來的。

開始玩丟雪球。

果然是北國出生的小孩，不怕冷，凡凡回家後馬上說要吃冰淇淋，一口接一口。

努力吃飯

Boston 下了第一場大雪，凡凡睡醒後便一直嚷著要出去玩雪。跟他說要吃完午飯才可以出去玩，凡凡聽了便卯起來吃，一口接一口，還不是眼睛巴望著窗外的落雪，從沒看過這麼努力吃飯的凡凡。

很快就吃完了。

FAS Freezes All Faculty Salaries, Cuts Searches

A freeze on salary raises for all faculty and non-union staff members as well as a hold on the bulk of current searches for tenure-track and tenured faculty were among the cost-cutting measures announced in a letter circulated to department chairs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences yesterday afternoon.

Signed by the top deans of the Faculty, the letter also put forward a new, more restrictive set of guidelines for what sort of candidates will be considered for “essential” instructorships and visiting faculty positions.

The new policy marks a considerable departure from the stance outlined by FAS Dean Michael D. Smith at a Faculty meeting in November, when he told department leaders to go ahead with all current searches if applicant pools remained as strong as anticipated.

Citing a projected 30 percent drop in the University’s endowment value this year, the deans wrote that the cost-cutting measures followed from a need to reduce the budget for the next fiscal year to levels at least $105 million below the current year’s budget. The Faculty’s budget for the fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2009 is set to be completed by March.

Department leaders were urged to keep news of the cuts quiet and withhold the information from colleagues until an official announcement at today’s Faculty meeting. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Crimson yesterday evening.

The deans’ letter re-confirmed Smith’s earlier commitment to maintaining a system of tenure-track promotion, and left open the possibility for a “small number of exceptions” to the ruling against tenure-track searches—a hint of flexibility that some professors said yesterday was encouraging.

“Frankly, if the University were to shut down all expansion, all hiring it would be a huge mistake in times like these, precisely when you need to be making smart investments and changing the University so that we’re stronger,” said biomedical engineering professor David A. Edwards.

Several professors, including Edwards, indicated yesterday that they had not yet read the letter, but that they were not taken aback by the measures it outlined, given the extent of the financial crisis.

“How could it be a surprise?” said comparative literature professor Ruth R. Wisse. “If there is a real budgetary slash, then obviously everybody has to bear their share of it in some way.”

“The easiest thing to do is to stop making new hires rather than to try and fire people,” she said.

In recognition of the difficult job market facing current graduate students, the deans also mentioned plans yesterday to develop a new position “akin to a teaching post-doc” for the University’s crop of newly-minted Ph.D. recipients.

The deans also asked that recent Ph.D. recipients, along with faculty from local institutions, be favored in situations where searches for non-ladder faculty instructors and visiting faculty are authorized as essential.

When asked why the deans requested that the news of the cuts be kept quiet until today, Smith wrote in an e-mailed statement, “I prefer to communicate directly with my faculty.”

“The Faculty Meeting gives me that opportunity. It also allows them to ask questions and offer comments.”

Harvard’s endowment—the largest in higher education—fell 22 percent in four months from its June 30 value of $36.9 billion, trumping the previous record loss of 12.4 percent in 1974, according to a letter from University President Drew G. Faust last week.

It was unclear yesterday how many faculty searches were pending and would be affected by the new policy. Faculty hiring has been in a "pause" period since April, when Smith informed professors that he was slowing down hiring to give FAS administrators a chance to take stock of how to move forward with their priorities.

Smith ground staff hiring to a halt in late November, setting administrators the task of finding what "critical" positions would still be filled.

The FAS leader wrote yesterday that he planned to comment more extensively on the letter’s policies in tomorrow’s Faculty meeting.

“This must be a nightmare for people who have to make these decisions,” said math professor Wilfried Schmid.

這個禮拜天終於下了今年的第一場雪，比往年晚了許多。

凡凡期待了好久，總算可以出去玩雪了。於是帶了個盆子說是要出去「抓雪」跟「裝雪」，興高采烈地出門了！

試了一陣子發現抓不到雪，還被雪打中眼睛！最後嚷著說要去上班。

發現雪不但抓不到，原來也裝不起來。

最後裝了幾塊冰塊意思一下。

要買 WALL-E

這陣子感恩節跟耶誕節兩大採購節慶，家裡收到了一堆商品目錄與廣告傳單。

凡凡也會拿起來翻，而且專看玩具的廣告；可以專心地一項一項慢慢看，仔細研究後做出決定跟你講說他要買哪一個。問題是沒人問凡凡要買甚麼啊？

昨天剛看了 WALL-E 的 DVD，開始對 WALL-E 狂熱起來，自然看到 WALL-E 眼睛一亮就把剛才想買的東西全拋下，只要買 WALL-E 了。

不過就只是個垃圾處理回收的機器人嗎？EVE 炫多了。可是小朋友似乎還是比較喜歡 WALL-E。

連續兩個週末全家人輪流感冒，輪流沒力...

凡凡現在會自己上廁所了，曉得脫褲子，但總是忘記要穿回去。
本來看他走了又回來以為是想到褲子還沒穿，結果原來是想到剛剛吃的乖乖忘了拿，趕緊折回來拿，仍舊光著屁股。

凡凡在家玩火車，現在有兩種火車，除了之前的 Geotrax 外還有 Ikea 買來木製的小火車。

凡凡開火車到一半忽然停住了，原來是他看見了紅色的手的標誌，知道是停止的意思，便停下來不走了。平常時過馬路教凡凡說紅色的手不能走，要等到白色的人才可以走，看來凡凡的確有聽進去。

學校的 Museum 裡面搜藏很多，凡凡最喜歡恐龍化石，每個禮拜都要來看一下，還好我們校內的人不用買門票，可以把博物館當家裡後院一樣走動。

整裝好準備帶凡凡去學校的 Nature History Museum 玩，因為離家很近，只有幾分鐘路程，便帶著凡凡一路慢慢走去。

走到一半，怕凡凡手會冷，教他把手插在口袋裡，結果凡凡手伸進去敲出了幾條前幾天萬聖節拿到的糖果，便開始吵著要吃糖。

一條糖果吃完了，搜搜口袋發現沒有，開始嚷著還要吃，到現在你跟我這兩個代名詞凡凡還是弄不太清楚，有時講對，有時說錯。

自從上次的 thomas and friends song 之後，常常帶凡凡到 youtube 上看凡凡喜歡看的卡通的 music video。

Curious George 的 Upside Down

出自 Curious George 的電影，電影其實還不錯，但平常看慣了二十分鐘長的 Curious George，一下子要看兩小時的故事實在太長了，看到後來連大人都覺得很累，不用說凡凡這年紀也還沒有辦法維持這麼長的興趣了。

凡凡比較喜歡看用電影片段剪成的 MV，每次看到變色龍那段都會止不住地大笑。

新英格蘭盛產龍蝦，好吃又便宜的很。凡凡愛吃，常常指名說要吃龍蝦，因此幾乎家裡每個禮拜都會吃上幾隻龍蝦。

凡凡見到龍蝦又滿心歡喜地找龍蝦玩，還曉得教育龍蝦說「這個就是雞蛋」！

楓紅

秋天到了，馬上轉涼了起來。這禮拜天的氣溫已經降到攝氏零度以下了。凡凡出門也開始要像包粽子般層層包裹起來。

坐在國民政府送給哈佛的石碑上，那個苦命馱碑的是龍生九子其中之一，不過忘了叫甚麼名字，跟凡凡說那個是烏龜，這樣對凡凡來說應該也比較容易理解罷。

戴毛帽凡凡有時會覺得頭癢。

新英格蘭的秋天最是漂亮，樹葉開始從綠轉紅，一樹黃的橘的到火紅的葉子，各種層次，好看得不得了。

凡凡看到地上都是落葉，彎身撿起丟著玩。不過最後說底下都是石頭見沒有答腔，就不爽了起來。

帶著凡凡到 yard 賞楓，紅楓葉已落滿地了。

凡凡看到大樹又想要爬樹，可是這樹實在太大爬不上去，之後又開始要賴人抱抱。

這週日帶凡凡去位在 Boston & Cambridge 中間的 Museum of Science 玩，凡凡常常去，凡凡爸爸則是第一次去。

凡凡媽媽說 Cambridge street 走到底就是了，結果騎單車載著凡凡走到 Cambridge street 底的時候還是沒有看到 Museum of Science，只好轉頭問凡凡

「Museum of Science 在哪裡？」

「在那裡！轉彎就到了。」凡凡回答。

果然是熟門熟路，轉個彎真的就看見 Museum of Science 在前面，凡凡真是太強大了。

在博物館裡，凡凡幾乎每個東西都曉得要怎麼玩。

凡凡越來越喜歡彈琴，特別是電子琴有許多功能可以玩，不同樂器或伴奏；有的時候興起還會自彈自唱起來。

採蘋果

在果園的門口擺著一地大大小小的南瓜，凡凡看了也要一個，就拿了個小南瓜給他。結果一路上從頭到尾都沒放開，一直拿著。

秋天到了，樹已經開始轉紅了，特別好看。

這次的成績，地上擺著 46 顆蘋果，加上凡凡嘴裡手裡各一顆，還有一顆南瓜。
比去年少一點，不過今年採的多半是 Pink Lady，去年第一次吃覺得採太少了。今年都挑些大顆的 pink lady，感覺很划算。

夏秋之交，又到了一年一度採蘋果的時候了，凡凡每年都來，這次終於可以全程參與採蘋果了。

凡凡是個規則王，現在很愛下指令告訴別人該怎麼做，蘋果放進去，要拿南瓜，要拿起來。

看到斜坡，還是不忘可以玩滾滾滾。

凡凡其實這幾天有點發燒，比較黏人，採著採著沒看到媽媽，開始問媽媽在哪裡。

禮拜日氣象預報說有颶風拜訪新英格蘭，很少見，不過去的是緬因州，麻州這裡沒甚麼風但整天都下著雨。

等到下午看雨似乎停了，便趕緊帶著凡凡出去外面活動一下。怕又會下雨，所以只在家旁的設計學院草地附近活動。

想到了個主意，在三輪車上綁條繩子，讓凡凡坐在車上拖著走；就像凡凡爸爸小時候在屏東讓凡凡爸爸的外婆拉著走一樣。

後來凡凡也下車想試著自己拉看看。

From our neighbor department, very creative and interesting poster for their microbeer hour.

I took this picture on Thursday.

"With free beer just around the corner, you might as well hold off jumping for one more day."

Sounds funny right?

Hmm...obviously not everyone agrees on that, especially under recent economic climates.

So, in the Friday morning, all the "jumper" posters were gone, replaced by this one.

Now everybody looks happy, at least in the poster.

Here is the posters from our department. It is our turns in charge of this week's happy hour. As our postdoc candidate visiting, it once again went to a very disorganized way.

Initially we wanted some Indian food, but they charged us $800 with $150 delivery fee. So we had hot dog at the end.

For the poster, finally Aaron made one hours before the end of Thursday.

The problem is, no one can get it.

It was for the (famous?) picture of Tim in Woods Hole.

After all, it doesn't matter people can get it or not. They still have free beer and hot dogs, which should be enough to keep them happy for a while.

PostDoc Candidates Visiting

This week we had two postdoc candidates coming for visit, on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.

Usually it is on students' shoulder arranging schedule for our guests. This time, somehow, Tim kept the job in his hand. As expected, it went to a pretty disorganized way...

No one knows who those two are in advance. No one was asked to sign-up talking with our visitors.

The first one came from UCSF (of course, where else it could be?), working on structural biology. She did a good PhD. However seems has no idea what she gonna do and why pick our lab...

The visit of second one is even more "interesting". In the morning when he came to the conference room, no one was there. Tim backed to the lab and told everybody there was a talk downstairs.

Then right before the talk, Tim said he hurted his back in the morning. So he would lay down on the ground. Thus the talk was given with Tim confortably laid down on the floor, with a pillow behind his head, a strange view.

It's not over yet, later the fire alarm came to interrupt the talk, Chris went out and found it was from our neighbor connected building. We decided to ignore it but our guest had to give his talk all the way with annoying alarming sound.

I wonder who will join our lab after all these...haha.

I am Old

No, not me. It's a quote from Tim during our discussion.

Recently I've struggled a bit on the storyline of my research. In brief, I am interested in a big question which can be divided to 4 or 5 small questions. Those sub-questions are different but all correlate to one another, making it difficult to pack into one story.

Thus I went to Tim and Chris asking for opinions. We then discussed details and problems in each direction. Questions in cytokinesis are difficult to tackle, since usually in there are more than one system working at the same time. You need everything to do anything.

At one point, Tim suddenly laughed and said:

"If it's five year ago, I would never do that. Ha-ha, I couldn't believe I make this suggestion to my student. You can try to fuse some kinases with kinesins, transfect to the cell, and see what happens."

Tim continued: "As a cell biologist, usually you take out things from a system and see what changes. If you are creating something not existing in the system, it is fake. That's why cell biologists don't use that kind of approach. I always thought in that way."

"However, after I talked to Windell Lim, suddenly I felt I am so conservative! I am old! What the hell! Maybe it's time for us to move on and try something bold."

Windell Lim, a UCSF professor, visited our department and had a discussion with Tim last week. Tim seemed to be very impressive on Lim's work. He even suggested Aaron, who just gradutaed, doing his postdoc in Lim's lab.

Lim works on synthetic biology, adding new components to systems, pretty cool.

另一個凡凡長高的例子，同一棵樹，幾個禮拜前還只能踩到最低一層，現在腳已經搆得著，手一出力，就爬上去更高的地方了。

凡凡也很小心，曉得要先用手試試看樹枝牢不牢靠，只見一直摸來摸去，這邊鬆鬆的，這邊也鬆鬆的。最後沒辦法，想下來時才發現不知道該怎麼下來。

前陣子凡凡的腿還搆不太到三輪車的蹋板，沒法自己前進，沒想到過不了幾天就可以自己騎了，小孩子長真快。

This morning I visited a friend who just delivered a very beautiful baby girl hours ago, sending her a car seat burrowed from another friend, for the hospital checkout.

I had this poster ready right after the Macbook commercial parody one, but somehow forgot to post it. Now it seems to be a perfect fit, a new soul coming to the (strange?) world.

凡凡的爸爸國曆生日，想說到外面吃。想了半天還是想不出來去哪好，中餐台菜沒有家裡煮的好吃，西式餐點又吃不慣。問凡凡的意見，凡凡說去吃麥當勞，也就順著他了。想大概是被快樂兒童餐的玩具制約了的結果吧。

不能喝汽水，只好喝果汁。

前陣子很熱的話題，說是中研院中餐廳的電視因此被移走了一台，剩下一台。想當然這引起很多人反彈，其中又以助理佔絕大多數。

說實話我覺得這十五位研究人員的理由有點糟，不是外國怎樣台灣就一定要怎樣才行，扯到健康又更遠了。我想這裡面更重要的問題應該是 - 為甚麼大家都已經理所當然地認為吃飯「就該」看電視？

或許客觀環境使然，台灣有限的空間能提供的活動有限，在家裡的時間比較長，而其中絕大部分的時間可能都花在看電視上。整個風氣跟文化已經養成，沒事時就看電視，所以在各個公共空間到處充滿了電視也就不足為奇了。

說真的，只要有點選擇性地挑電視節目看，而不是打開電視不管甚麼都照單全收，一定可以大幅減少花在電視上的時間。台灣目前普遍的情況像是被電視制約，而不是人在控制電視。

如果餐廳一開始就沒有擺放電視，會不會有人去要求一定要看電視？應該也不至於，那為甚麼一開始餐廳會覺得該放幾台電視在那邊？因為事實上外面每間自助餐館也都是這樣做，是理所當然很自然的事。所以這是整個社會風氣跟習慣的問題。

這爭議說嚴重其實也沒甚麼大不了，會拿出來講是因為讓我想起上次回台灣時看到的情況，印象特別深。

有一天中午跟凡凡媽媽帶著凡凡去高雄漢神百貨樓上美食街吃東西，沒想到整層樓的柱子跟牆面上到處都是電視，這還不打緊，播的竟然是股市大盤各股的指數，這實在有點糟糕，是怎樣的社會，會認為這些資訊是我們無時無刻都需要知道的？百貨公司的美食街大家吃飯的地方需要直播股市漲跌？

不是說外國怎麼樣都好，但台灣這樣真的是病了。

常常聽到宣導說要建立書香社會，聽了幾十年還在「要」建立書香社會。把看電視的時間挪一點去看看書，甚麼書都可以，對自己對社會都是件好事。

小朋友，吃飯的時候不要看電視！

關心小朋友飲食習慣的媽媽都會教導小朋友吃飯的時候不看電視。中央研究院雖然是臺灣最高的研究機構，可是罔顧媽媽的叮嚀、把健康的飲食習慣棄而不顧。
我們對吃不太挑剔，平實的活動中心的自助餐廳，本來是我們平常用餐的地方。可是自助餐廳只要開門營業，無時無刻都在播放電視新聞。先前兩臺中只有一臺播放，讓不想看電視的人還有小角落可以勉強棲息用餐。可是這一年來，自助餐廳的兩邊的電視火力全開，讓想健康用餐的人無可棲息。讓我們除非迫不得以，就放棄在自助餐廳用餐了。
電視不應該在中研院的餐廳存在，理由有二。一是文化的，二是生理健康的。文化的原因，是學術機構的用餐環境，要滿足兩個核心的功能，第一提供獨自的學人寧靜的空間用餐，第二是讓在餐桌共聚的學人們有和悅的知識交流的環境。世界上令人敬重的學術機構的餐廳莫不如此。美國的私立機構哈佛、耶魯、史丹佛、普林斯頓的高等研究院如此，州立的加州大學、明尼蘇達、威斯康新也如此；德國的海德堡、柏林大學、法國的巴黎大學如此，日本、義大利、荷蘭的大學也如此。英國的牛津和劍橋學院生活的重心，更就是提供學人深刻的文化交談的餐廳。嘈雜的電視一來讓人無法寧靜用餐，又妨礙同仁之間的知識交談。用電視新聞拌飯的學術機構的餐廳，就我們所知，只有臺灣的學術機構而已。可是連中研院也不能免俗嗎？
第二，臺灣電視新聞的特性，尤其不適合用餐收看。比較一下臺灣的電視新聞和令人尊敬的國際電視新聞，如CNN、BBC、NHK等，我們就會發現國外媒體的新聞播報速度和緩、聲音沈穩，給人平靜、有權威的感覺。臺灣的新聞播報清一律把音調特別拉高，播報的速度急促，符合臺灣媒體喜歡羶色腥，追求緊張刺激的調性。聲調高、說話急造成的生理效應，讓焦躁、不安，讓人無法寧靜用餐、或和悅交談。長期暴露在這樣的空間，甚至令人產生焦慮症。更不用說是媽媽所關心的，一面吊著下巴張嘴看電視，所影響的咀嚼消化的問題。
我們建議院方要有所作為。我們向餐廳經營者反映，他們總是以有客人要看為由，把我們打發，或者要我們到隔壁的房間用餐。有顧客要求就要提供服務，在進步的社會裡，未必成立。如果有顧客要抽煙，餐廳就要開放抽煙嗎？不是的，因為二手煙會妨礙別人健康，所以文明的社會立法禁止在公共空間吸煙。臺北市的捷運為了維持整潔明亮的現代空間形像，禁止乘客在捷運車站與車廂內飲食，幾年下來也證明是好的政策。在吃飯的時候看電視新聞像吸煙一樣，妨礙所有用餐人的飲食健康，所以不應該在院內餐廳播放。把堅持健康的人請到其他空間用餐也不對！況且現在不管電子或平面新聞，在網路、在家裡的電視上，想看隨時都可以看到，不必要吃飯的時候強迫不要看的人一起受罪。尤其中研院是以追求知識自任的學術機構，我們要的餐廳，是可以寧靜用餐、和悅作智識交流的場所。看電視吃飯實在不應該是中研院文化的一部份。請把餐廳的電視移走吧！

Yes, I know. You can argue it means "Yahoo!" the website saying Brady is out for season.

Do you really believe that? Everyone knows editors tend to be slick, witty and cunning, especially in devising headlines. There's no way on earth this wasn't meant to have a double meaning. Simply lack of class.

Now it raises up my passion for the coming game this Sunday. It will be very interesting and give me tremendous joy if the New York "the new team to beat" Jets lose to the New England "Brady-less, crappy" Patriots.

A New Interesting Course

Finally I finished my abstract for the ASCB in December at San Francisco, trying hard to present something which is not relevant to the core of my current studies...

One annoying thing of ASCB annual meeting is, there are too many weasels in it. If you present some preliminary data, very likely you will see a similar but incomplete study published on some mediocre journals 6 months later. It just happened on one postdoc in our lab last month (uh...okay, in his case, it is 7 months later)

Right after I submitted my abstract, I got an email notice about new courses provided this semester. One of them is very interesting. I definitely will "audit" it (unfortunately right now I just don't have the luxury to spend most of my time on one course).

Here it is. Pretty cool.

Visualizing Molecular Processes with Maya for Beginners
Course Director and Lecturer: Gael McGill, Ph.D. (Founder and CEO of Digizyme, http://www.digizyme.com)

This series of classes will offer students an introduction to advanced scientific visualization techniques using some of Hollywood’s leading 3D software packages (including Autodesk Maya, Luxology modo, and Maxon Cinema4D). Focus will be placed on existing modeling and animation tools for purposes of visualizing biological processes. Students will also become familiar with methods for importing PDB and other structural data into these 3D packages via a number of molecular graphics programs. Each session will be divided into a 1 hour lecture (during which general concepts will be reviewed) followed by 2 hours of computer lab (during which students will follow scripted tutorials). Guest lecturers will also share some of their unique production techniques for molecular animation. The culmination of all the lectures and lab-based tutorials will be for each student to complete a short scientific visualization – all take-home assignments will be geared towards the creation of this animation.

Please note: All HILS students are eligible to attend this series of courses. Students registering for this course must attend all 8 sessions and complete all assignments. All sessions will be held in the Countway Library at Harvard Medical School on Fridays from 9am-12pm. Students who fulfill these requirements will be awarded credit for 4 nanocourses.

Because of the significant time involved in completing the assignments outside of class, all students must have permission from their thesis advisors to participate. A ‘registration form’ for the course is attached. Please submit this registration form at nanocourses@hms.harvard.edu. We are limited to just 8 students so submit your registration asap if you are interested in participating.

B School

不知為何，凡凡特愛玩石頭，想到商學院那邊有一條走廊很有特色滿滿地石頭遍地，便騎車過了河，轉往 B School 去。

照片是 2004 年剛到學校的頭一天，跟凡凡媽媽像觀光客一樣到處逛，第一次走來這走廊的時候拍的。很喜歡這條走廊。

2008 年凡凡第一次來，不過牆上的蔓藤大概是修剪過頭了，沒有之前那麼茂盛。

凡凡高興地玩著地上的碎石子。

碎石頭滾到鞋子裡，凡凡試著自己挖出來不成，情急開始要爸爸幫他用，一急之下石頭都講不出來，只能講「那個那個」。

商學院旁就是學校的體育場跟球場，凡凡看到斜坡先是想要「下去坐著」，越坐越近，之後想到便又開始玩他拿手的「滾滾滾」了。

重回 Charles River

凡凡吃東西總是在外面吃得比較多，趁天氣好到 Charles River 邊上野餐順便看河上過往的獨木舟及遊艇。凡凡果然吃得很開心，不過有個壞習慣，沒看到衛生紙，吃完手就往身上衣服擦。

放風箏，凡凡現在還不懂不時要拉一下，風箏才不會掉下來，所以往往風箏在地上的時間比在天空上多。

開始像個長大的男孩，想要爬樹攀高了。

In Breakthrough, Harvard Lab Causes Cells To Change Type

I read this paper this morning after woke up, a very important and well written paper. Authors directly reprogramed cells from one kind to the other without "dedifferentiation", showing possibilities to avoid moral dilemma on using stem cells.

While I like this paper, it reinforces my impression on current stem-cell researches. Similar to alchemy versus chemistry, "stem cell biology" obviously still has a long way to go on the "cell biology" part.

More real cell biologists are required to further advance its frontier .

It's about an article I just read, to the idea of equality, not too much, and neither too less.

As a parent myself, I always enjoy reading those children psychology/behavior papers. Here is one I read today by the News@Nature.com.

Children learn rules of equality by age eight. But those with siblings are more selfish than those without.

It's really amazing to witness the whole process how kids build-up those concepts with time.

凡凡這陣子每天洗澡都在澡盆裡嚷著說要游泳，禮拜天天氣特好，便帶著凡凡到泳池讓他去游一游，沒想到真看到了泳池，馬上龜起來說不要游了，最後只好帶他去旁邊淺淺的小孩池讓他玩水。

上次一去羅德島時凡凡還小，甚麼都不懂所以還敢下水游，現在大了知道害怕，反而不敢進泳池了。

應該是真的玩得很盡興，最後換回衣服準備回家時，在池子旁的椅子上睡著了。

凡凡很喜歡看相機裡面自己的影片，特別是把相機翻轉過來自拍的時候，當凡凡發現相機螢幕上的影像是即時的之後，便開始愛現地耍寶了起來。

凡凡白得很快，幾天沒曬到太陽馬上就白了回來，不過這陣子常往外跑，手跟腳還是可以看到明顯的一半牛奶一半巧克力般的兩截膚色。

玩了一陣子天空開始下雨了，便進法學院的餐廳裡躲雨。樓上有個小客廳，裡面有平面液晶電視，家庭劇院之類的東西，還有一桌撞球檯，便跟凡凡玩了起來。

眼看天快下雨了，便帶著凡凡慢慢往家的方向走著，經過常上台灣新聞的燕京圖書館。

凡凡開始跟門口的石獅子玩了起來，拿著球往石獅子底座的空隙扔，想讓球穿過去，一直喊著「過隧道」，因為常玩火車的關係，現階段只要是穿過某個洞的動作，凡凡都叫做「過隧道」。

凡凡今天走嘻哈風，背個小背包，就像是上學的小朋友。

MCB Department

MCB Department，James Watson 以前待過的系，歷史輝煌。著名的 Icon 是門口的大犀牛，許多人都喜歡與她合照。

凡凡背後那隻就是了。凡凡的側影，看得出來有點小「摳陶」。

當然也要合照一下。

MCB 的正門也很有特色，門框裡有各式各樣生物的浮雕，凡凡看得很高興，一直講著他認識的水母蝴蝶跟蜜蜂。

MCB 另外一個特色就是大樓上方也刻有各種動物的圖樣，正面是一群大象。

凡凡想爬上犀牛站的高台，凡凡看著高台，「沒有樓梯可以上去」，還會自己說「凡凡加油」。本來心想這麼高一定不可能，沒想到還真的差一點就讓凡凡爬上去了，真是不容小覷。

每到一地，自然不會少了凡凡必玩的滾滾滾，找了個斜坡又開始滾起來了。

只是現在自己一人滾不過癮，非得要人陪他一起「從上面滾滾滾下來」才可以。

沙灘

凡凡喜歡玩沙，常嚷著要去海邊沙灘玩。

不過氣象預報說下午會有雷陣雨，想說不好出遠門，便帶著凡凡到 MCB department 的中庭，那裡有個沙灘排球場地，湊和一下也算是去沙灘玩了。

其實今天不是到海邊的好天氣，氣象預報說偶有陣雨，不過因為是沙雕比賽的最後一天，所以還是來了。玩了一陣天上烏雲緩緩飄來，便拉拉凡凡的手準備要回家了，凡凡意猶未盡，一直喊著「還要玩還要玩」。

Our department crew is very creative, always bringing something unique to the department. Recently, they start the naming game.

For instance, our copy room.

This is our fancy copy machine.

Her name is Endora, after the famous character.

"Endora is a special lady. She can scan documents into PDF's as well as make copies for you. She likes to read while copying or scanning, so please place your documents face down. If you were hanging around all day, you'd want something to read as well.

Endora usually leaves the copies in the tray to your left or the tray underneath the scanner.

Don't be fresh."

Our shredder also has a name - Maude. Yes, it is named after the mouthy one in Golden Girls.

The note said:

"Please respect Maude
- DO NOT stick your appendages into the shredder for any reason. Not even for that reason, NOPE.
- DO NOT mistake the shredder for a fax machine. It will shred instead of faxing.
- DO NOT take our your frustration on Maude. She needs time to chew like anyone else."

Even our coffee machines have their own names - Thelma and Louise.

The note of reasons:

每次帶凡凡出去玩，如果可以，都會儘量讓凡凡打赤腳，畢竟現代小孩子用雙腳踩著泥土的機會是越來越少了。凡凡爸爸就很討厭穿鞋，如果得穿就穿涼鞋，還是尺吋大一號的鞋子，不喜歡雙腳被包覆住的感覺。凡凡在這方面似乎也很相似，有機會就自己把鞋給脫了跑來跑去。

凡凡很能爬，這建築是政府學院下的中東研究中心，面對胸口高度的平台，凡凡也是輕鬆地就爬了上去。

鑽洞，很意外凡凡竟然真能穿過去。

跳舞，快樂地轉圈圈(好像很耳熟，哈哈)。

下午帶凡凡去草地上玩耍，凡凡見到斜坡很自然地又跑去滾來滾去，不旦滾下來，還可以滾上去。

要爸爸也得一起滾。

跟龍蝦捉迷藏

凡凡媽媽今天買了一對龍蝦回來，凡凡水族館去多了，對龍蝦是一點也不害怕，很快地就把冰箱上的磁鐵龍蝦和螃蟹拿了下來，把龍蝦當玩具玩了起來。

眼看龍蝦快跑掉了，直講抓回來，還想跟龍蝦捉迷藏。

之後自己跟磁鐵龍蝦和螃蟹玩了起來，忽然想到要穿爸爸的拖鞋，然後指定爸爸去穿媽媽的那雙。

在美國野餐，飛盤是必備之物。凡凡現在還不太會丟飛盤，不過他發現了另一個玩法，就是把飛盤當鍋子學媽媽炒菜。凡凡自己說他在做蛋炒飯，不時還會把嘴湊進發出津津有味的聲音，說好吃。

後來想到了，又把樹枝拿來當鍋鏟繼續炒他的蛋炒飯。

舉重

照例禮拜日帶著凡凡去 Charles River 旁邊遊玩，凡凡的表哥這陣子來玩，就一起到河邊野餐。

凡凡看到了不知是修剪過還是自然掉下來的樹枝，很高興地去撿起來玩舉重，還會稱讚自己「好厲害」！過程中還自然地學會要抓重心比較好出力，也算是學到了甚麼吧。

凡凡力氣真的很大，最後還可以將這麼大的樹枝整個舉起來。

Finally I got the cell I wanted badly, the hybridoma for anti-GFP antibodies.

I was looking for good monoclonal anti-GFP antibodies for IP, and found a paper from China. I emailed them and later was informed they were leaving for the epidemic prevention in Sichuan Province where the horrible earthquake took place. After their return, they were very nice to me, and eventually said yes to give me their hybridoma cells. I told them that I came from Taiwan and felt very sorry about the earthquake. Possibly the significant donation from Taiwan really warms their hearts. It is really a big favor for giving away the hybridoma cells for nothing. I truly appreciate it.

"Gay Genes" May Be Good for Women

Camperio Ciani's team suggests that these gay genes may actually increase how attracted both men and women are to men rather than making gay men more "feminine," as some researchers had earlier proposed. Although this is bad for male fertility, it is good for female fertility and allows such genes to survive at low but stable rates in a population, the authors say.

Dean Hamer, a behavioral geneticist at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, who pioneered the search for gay genes, calls the study "an elegant mathematical analysis." He adds that the team has come up with a "simple solution" to the Darwinian paradox posed by homosexuality: "What is a 'gay gene' in a man is a 'superstraight gene' in a woman," he says.

Any thought? California just joined Massachusetts as the only two states in the US allowed same-sex marriage. Life could be tough for them especially when they were teenage. There are some gays in our department. One of them ever told me how he defended himself when classmates trying to humiliate him in public, by asking if he is gay, intentionally. He replied:

"Yes, I am gay; and I just slept with your dad last night. It felt sooooooooooooooooo good!"

Although it is a bit mean, but I think it's a pretty good defense to other mean people.

City of Champions

Well, Celtics finally end the 22-year drought and bring back the NBA champions.

In the first two rounds, actually I was against the Celtics, rooting for the underdog. Then in the NBA finals, when they played Lakers and the overrated Phil Jackson, without a doubt I am in green.

In one hand, I am happy that Celtics win another Champtions for Boston, in another, it keeps remind me what it would be if Patriots didn't lost the Superbowl. It still hurts, sigh.

Maybe from this one one, RedSox, Patriots, Bruins, and Revolutions, will win another four champtions in a row, making Boston a real city for champions. We'll see.

凡凡現在帶出去越來越喜歡耍寶，愛現又人來瘋，凡凡常聽到別的媽媽對他說 "hi dear!" ，現在到公園遇見其她小女孩也會跟人家說 "hi dear!"，真是‧‧‧

這次趁雨停帶到 science center 中庭透透氣，讓凡凡跑跑，一直講一些星星下山了星星回去了。
